I am happy to show you the art of Shodo.
A student of mine brought me some tasty Anpans from Hiro-Takahashi, Zürich-
Was all soooo yummy!
All wonderful works from the participants
And I would like to share some Winter snaps just to say “good bye” to the season.
❄️Calligraphy-ing on snow “with our finger-brushes.
It only lasts the moment…either way neither way.
I just can not help doing calligraphy on this beautiful paper like snow.
やっと降りてきた突然の雪。衝動を抑えきれず、冷たいとはわかってても 指で書かずにはいられない、、、 。

Thank you very much for your support this year 2018!
The end of year is the busiest season in Japan just like pre-Christmas time in Europe.
The actual 31st December is called OMISOKA 大晦日.
In order to welcome the new year with a transparent fresh mind, families come together to clean up the house clearing the dirt of the old year.
Normally it becomes so quiet and empty in the cities as many go back to their home town during this time.
Here is the perfect text to finish off the year!
; New Year’s Eve, end of year
年 Toshi ：year, season, years
越しKoshi : to transit, go over
Good bye the year of the Dog!!
Enjoy the last hours of 2018!
Dear students, colleagues and Shodo friends,
May Christmas season be filled with joy and light!
I share some pictures here.
The calligraphy papers are origami-ed, wrapped and up-cycled this year!
Calligraphy ” Tomoshibi ” by Rie Takeda

All of you did very well – compliment on your full concentration and mindfulness process. Great job!

We had lots of (high) Autumn Otehon texts, mainly with the ” fire 火 ” element and yes, sure some ” misty fog / Kiri 霧 ” and ” maple tree / Kaede 楓 ”
Autumn / AKI 秋
Lantern light / Tomoshibi 灯
The illustration shows the pictographically developed composition.
Rice plant(s) + Fire = Autumn 秋

” IKIGAI “- giving every day meaning and joy
by Yukari Mitsuhashi
‘The word ikigai is formed of two Japanese characters: iki, meaning life, and gai, meaning value or worth. Ikigai, then, is the value of life, or happiness in life. Put simply, it’s the reason you get up in the morning.’

Hope you are enjoying the Easter season.
Here is another Sanshotai snap from this morning.
Have you seen the cherry blossom yet?!
– To Visit
– Otozu_retu, Tazu_neru, Hou
In Sanshotai three calligraphy styles
Sosho ⬅️Gyosho ⬅️Kaisho
: 言/ Word, to say, to speak
: 方/ wide, four directions
訪 ; initially meant ‘ asking widely in order to follow a line of inquiry ‘ which involved ‘ visiting many people ‘ and – now ‘ to visit ‘ is a major meaning. It rarely means ‘ to inquire ‘ nowadays.
Morning calligraphy in the Black Forest!
Happy Easter everyone!!

Otehon for early spring….
” Koharu ” in Kaisho style
*Haru : spring
➡early spring, the beginning of spring
*For the beginners to the inter-mediate level1.
*With a medium or a big brush
小: Hane-Jumping technique ; directly before sarting the jumping, the curve should go little outwards(to the right hand side). More cursuve than straight. The Hane Jumping does not need to be big.
春: Three horizontal lines are in 1. bending upwards, 2.straight up, 3. bending downwards
Left Harai: A long streching lune. Just before letting the enegry/pressure out, try to open the hair little bit.
Right Harau : Starting calmly rather thin and gradually opening the hair. Always checking the balance.
Before you do the Sun”at the end, check the middle line and adjust. The right vertical line of the Sun should be longer.
I am just introducing the Shakyou 写経calligraphy with the Heart Sutra (Hannya-Shingyo) to the advanced students.
They are doing very well!! Despite the tiny Shakyou brush….
Once one gets used to it, the brush movement would become lighter and smoother – and eventually you would feel very meditative just like hearing the hymn of Heart Sutra.
Three expressions of
“I LOVE YOU~ Aishiteru”
From the right hand side ;
– Kanji and Hiragana
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
Loads of Love,
Do you enjoy watching the winter stars?!
I love the winter stars..they look bright, clear and so beautiful.
This Otehon is perfect for our cold icey evenings.
The text is called; “Fuyu no Ryuusei”
The direct translation is like..
“A shooting satr in winter (sky)”
This Otehon consists of four letters.
1.冬 Kanji ~fuyu, Winter
2.の Hiragana ~ particle between two nouns
3.流 Kanji ~ Ryuu, to flow
4.星 Kanji ~ Sei/ Hoshi, Star(s)
*流星 ~ Ryuusei, a shooting star
-for the beginner to intermediate level
-using medium/large brush, can be both hard or soft haired
-if you are beginner, make sure you practised already jumping, corner, slide-out techniques at least a few hours.
*Above: A Kanji ” Star ” in Sanshotai.
One of my Sanshotai collections.
; Red-crowned cranes
In three calligraphy styles.
Some call them as Japanese Cranes.
long love, long relationship, good luck, beauty, hopes.
Red-crowned cranes are one of the most loved and respected animals in Japan.
Despite the chilly frosty wind, all came to “calligraphy-ing” yesterday!
Thanks very much to everyone who attended the workshop.
All did wonderful practice!
I am very glad to get to know and to teach such mindfulness people!
Next workshop is on Sunday, the 4th. December. With the theme ” Winter & for Christmas cards”
Calligraphy texts will be all winter-feeling inspired. Besides our calligraphy practice, I will provide a pair of blank cards. So if you want, you can either do calligraphy on the cards, or fix an extra calligraphy paper on- as you get inspired towards the end of the workshop. It would be an unique card for Christmas.
For sign up, please send me a direct mail.
